The School Founders

St. James School previously, St. James Junior High School was established in 1980 at Gongrai by Zoram Baptist Mission (ZBM) for the students who passed Class V from the Baptist Mission Primary School run by the ZBM missionaries.

It was initially opened only up to class VI. Then it was upgraded to class X in 1985. The motto of the school is “Faith & Service”. The school went through lots of difficulties right from its inception.

The school building and staff quarters were burnt five times by unknown miscreants. But now by God’s guidance, there is no such disturbance. The Mizoram Baptist Kohhran Hmeichhe Pawl (BKHP), the women organisation of the Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM), played a vital role for the establishment of this school.

One of the BKHP leaders said that she was moved by the letter sent by Rev.B.Thangchina (the then F/D, ZBM, Tripura Field) writing to her about the urgency of establishing high school for the Halam-Kuki tribes in Tripura.

Then, the agendum to establish high school was submitted and discussed in 1976 in the MBKHP Conference at Chawngte,Mizoram. But the final resolution was passed in 1977 in the MBKHP Conference held at Serkawn and thereafter, it was affirmed and materialised by the BCM Assembly in 1980.

The MBKHP, who forwarded the agendum to the BCM Assembly contributed money to construct a house for class room at the end of 1979. The first founding teacher was Mr.C.Lalrinawma.
